Sunshine Coast program starts with a circular tour

On 25 June, cleaners, teachers and ambassador students from three schools joined us for a tour of the Sunshine Coast to see how functional sustainability and the circular economy are ‘live’ and all around us.

Our first stop was Maroochydore Smart City, where we explored the automated waste collection system operating beneath the city — an incredible example of how technology and infrastructure can change the way resources are managed.

We then stopped at Subway for lunch, where we looked at functional sustainability ‘live’ in an everyday business environment — showing that resource efficiency and smarter systems aren't limited to specialist sustainability projects.

After lunch, we visited innovative Sunshine Coast circular manufacturer MegaBeam. MegaBeam diverts timber offcuts from truss companies away from landfill and transforms them into beautiful glulam beams for the construction industry — a fantastic example of keeping valuable resources in circulation.

A big thank you to the Department of Manufacturing Hub Sunshine Coast for this opportunity to show our school communities the circular economy ‘live’ — from city infrastructure and everyday businesses through to circular manufacturing.

What could this look like in your school?

The same thinking can start right inside your school. Climate Action Schools' Divert & Earn program supports schools to put practical systems in place to recover resources, reduce what is sent to landfill and create value from materials that might otherwise be thrown away.
