Turning School Waste into Learning, Income, and Opportunity

Most school programs ask teachers and parents to do more.

Climate Action Schools works differently.

We help schools set up a simple system that turns everyday waste — like cans, bottles, paper and metal — into:

♻️ Less landfill
💰 Regular income for the P&C
🎓 World of work learning for students
🤝 Connections with local industry for support and sustainability

And the best part?
It doesn’t require extra staff hours — just a smarter way of working together.

What Happens at a Climate Action School?

Schools create something called a Sustainability Skills Centre (SSC).

Don’t worry — it’s not complicated. It’s simply an organised space where recyclable resources are sorted and measured, instead of going to landfill.

Participants get involved in:

  • learning how recycling and the circular economy works

  • understanding sustainability through hands-on activities

  • seeing how science, engineering and manufacturing connect in a simulated work environment

This becomes a live learning space linked to STEM and vocational subjects.

Why Parents and P&C Groups Love It

Most fundraising activities require parents to constantly sell things.

Climate Action Schools works differently.

Instead of selling products, the school recovers value from resources already being thrown away.

Schools can generate income from:

  • cans and bottles

  • white paper

  • glass

  • metal

Many schools begin receiving regular recycling income within a few months of starting. How quick this happens is up to you. The income goes straight back to the school community, through the P&C.

Real Benefits for Participants

Participants gain more than environmental awareness.

They learn practical skills like:

  • problem solving

  • teamwork

  • systems thinking

  • sustainability in action

Industry partners also visit schools to show students how these same improvement tools are used in industry workplaces.

This helps students see real career pathways in engineering, manufacturing and sustainability to name a few. Remember, like safety, sustainability is a skill required by all industries.

What Climate Action Schools Provides

We guide schools through the whole process as a critical support partner.

Schools receive:

✔ A step-by-step system to apply a ‘fit for purpose’ circular resource recovery system for your school
✔ Training for staff in simple improvement tools with recognition available
✔ Support connecting with recycling and circular partners
✔ Access to industry mentors and workplace pathways
✔ Ongoing coaching from experienced facilitators
✔ Data and reporting to support future grant applications
✔ Access to world class systems and technology (ai) to support your transition

Everything is designed to be simple, practical and achievable.

How Your School Can Get Started

The process is straightforward.

Step 1 — Talk with your Principal

A parent, P&C member or staff member introduces the idea to the Principal. We’ve found it’s best to have all 3 on the same page. Principal, Business Manager and P&C coordinator all vision aligned.

Step 2 — Attend a short briefing

The school’s Principal, Business Manager and a P&C representative attend a briefing to see how the system works.

Step 3 — Decide if it’s right for your school

There’s no commitment until the school understands the benefits and requirements.

Step 4 — Staff workshop and setup

A one-day workshop helps the school team learn the system and set up a suitable system.

Step 5 — Start recovering resources

Once the system is running, schools connect with recycling partners and begin generating income.

The Bigger Picture

Climate Action Schools helps schools:

🌏 Reduce landfill waste by 75%+, or more
🎓 Give people practical sustainability skills
💰 Generate ongoing P&C income
🤝 Connect with industry partners
🏫 Build a stronger culture of teamwork in schools

It’s about creating schools that are smarter, more sustainable and better connected to the future workforce.
